Why Taekwon-Do?

Taekwon-Do was founded by General Choi Hong Hi from Korea

Taekwon-Do combines the best of Karate, Kung Fu, Kick Boxing, Jujitsu, Wang Chun and other martial arts. TaeKwon-Do is undergoing a metamorphosis as it grows and changes and improves over time.

Taekwon-Do includes fitness training, stretching, offensive and defensive techniques such as punching and kicking, semi-contact sparring, breaking of boards and bricks, and worldwide competitions which any student can attend or take part in. No other martial art has such a broad and encompassing program. Take a look at the pictures and videos and see for yourself what TaeKwon-Do is about.

Taekwon-Do is the world's most popular martial art and has schools located worldwide so that once you've started, you will never have to start over again, even if you move away to another city or another country.

The Founding Grand Master in Europe is Grand Master Rhee Ki Ha who is located in the United Kingdom. The chief instructor of Surrey TKD had all of his gradings done by Grand Master Rhee up until Grand Master Rhee resigned from the ITF.

The tenets of Taekwon-Do are courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and the indomitable spirit. Grand Master Rhee instructed us to be human weapons, however, we are also trained to have the characteristics to manage this powerful ability.

Taekwon-Do TENETS

Explanation of Tenets

Needless to say, the success or failure of Taekwon-Do training depends largely on how one observes and implements the tenets of TaeKwon-Do which should serve as a guide for all serious students of the art.

COURTESY (Ye Ui)

It can be said that courtesy is an unwritten regulation prescribed by ancient teacher of philosophy as a mean to enlighten human being while maintaining a harmonious society. It can further be as an ultimate criterion required of a mortal.

TaeKwon-Do students should attempt to practice the following elements of courtesy to build up their noble character and to conduct the training in an orderly manner as well.

To promote the spirit of mutual concessions

To be ashamed of one's vices, contempting those of others

To be polite to one another

To encourage the sense of justice and humanity

To distinguish instructor from student, senior from junior, and elder from younger

To behave oneself according to etiquette

To respect others' possessions

To handle matters with fairness and sincerity

To refrain from giving or accepting a gift when in doubt

INTEGRITY (Yom Chi)

In Taekwon-Do, the word integrity assumes a looser definition than the one usually presented in Webster's dictionary. One must be able to define right and wrong and have a conscience, if wrong, to feel guilt. Listed are some examples where integrity is lacking:

The instructor who misrepresents himself and his art by presenting improper techniques to his students because of a lack of knowledge or apathy.

The student who misrepresents himself by "fixing" breaking materials before demonstrations.

The instructor who camouflages bad technique with luxurious training halls and false flattery to his students.

The student who requests ranks from an instructor, or attempts to purchase it.

The student who gains rank for ego purposes or the feeling of power.

The instructor who teaches and promotes his art for materialistic gains.

The students whose actions do not live up to his words.

The student who feels ashamed to seek opinions from his juniors.

PERSEVERANCE (In Nae)

There is an old Oriental saying, "Patience leads to virtue or merit, One can make a peaceful home by being patient for 100 times." Certainly happiness and prosperity are most likely brought to the patient person. To achieve something, whether it is a higher degree or the perfection or a technique, one must set his goal, then constantly persevere. Robert Bruce learned his lesson of perseverance from the persistent efforts of a lowly spider. It was this perseverance and tenacity that finally enabled him to free Scotland in the fourteenth century. One of the most important secrets in becoming a leader of TaeKwon-Do is to overcome every difficulty by perseverance. Confucius said, "one who is impatient in trivial matters can seldom achieve success in matters of great importance."

SELF CONTROL (Guk Chi)

This tenet is extremely important inside and outside the dojang, whether conducting oneself in free sparring or in one's personal affairs. A loss of self-control in free sparring can prove disastrous to both student and opponent. An inability to live and work within one's capability or sphere is also a lack of self-control. According to Lao-Tzu "the term of stronger is the person who wins over oneself rather than someone else."

INDOMITABLE SPIRIT (Baekjul Boolgool)

"Here lie 300, who did their duty," a simple epitaph for one of the greatest acts of courage known to mankind. Although facing the superior forces of Xerxes, Leonidas and his 300 Spartans at Thermoplylae showed the world the meaning of indomitable spirit. It is shown when a courageous person and his principles are pitted against overwhelming odds. A serious student of TaeKwon-Do will at all times be modest and honest. If confronted with injustice, he will deal with the belligerent without any fear or hesitation at all, with indomitable spirit, regardless of whosoever and however many the number may be. Confucius declared," It is an act of cowardice to fail to speak out against injustice." As history has proven, those who have pursued their dreams earnestly and strenuously with indomitable spirit have never failed to achieve their goals.

STUDENT OATH

I shall observe the tenets of Taekwon-Do

I shall respect the instructor and seniors

I shall never misuse Taekwon-Do

I shall be a champion of freedom and justice

I shall build a more peaceful world

Taekwon-Do Training Secrets

Select a good instructor with proven capabilities. Under the proper guidance of a competent instructor, a student can learn the true techniques of TaeKwon-Do in a comparatively short period of time with less effort.

  1. Concentration, Reaction Force, Equilibrium (Sine Wave), Mass, Breath Control, and Speed)
  2. To understand the purpose and method of each movement clearly
  3. To bring the movement of the eyes, hands, feet and breath into a single coordinated action
  4. To choose the appropriate attacking tool for each vital spot
  5. To become familiar with the correct angle and distance for attack and defence
  6. Keep both the arms and legs bent slightly while the movement is in motion
  7. All movements must begin with a backward motion with very few exceptions. However, once the movement is in motion it should not be stopped before reaching the target
  8. To create a sine wave during the movement by utilising the knee spring properly
  9. To exhale briefly at the moment of each blow except when using a connecting motion

Taekwon-Do
Belt System

There are six orders of belts in Taekwon-Do: white, yellow, green, blue, red, and black.

Multi-coloured Taekwon-Do belts tied in a knot

10th Kup - White Belt

White signifies innocence, as that of a beginning student who has no previous knowledge of Taekwon-Do.

8th Kup - Yellow Belt

Yellow signifies the Earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root as the Taekwon-Do foundation is being laid.

6th Kup - Green Belt

Green signifies the plant's growth as the Taekwon-Do skill begins to develop.

4th Kup - Blue Belt

Blue signifies the Heaven, towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training in Taekwon-Do progresses.

2th Kup - Red Belt

Red signifies danger, cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away.

1st Degree and above - Black Belt

Black is the opposite of white, therefore, signifying the maturity and proficiency in TaeKwon-Do. It also indicates the wearer's imperviousness to darkness and fear.

Taekwon-Do theory of power

The Taekwon-Do theory of power is based upon science, unlike some other martial arts that promote the spirit or some other religious aspects. Force = Mass x Accleration is a proven scientific formula. Building as much force as you can in Taekwon-Do means focusing on an acronym CREMBS which stands for Concentration, Reaction Force, Equilibrium (Sine Wave), Mass, Breath Control, and Speed.

Concentration (Jip Joong)
Concentrating force of a punch, strike or kick is about using the 2 knuckles on the forefist, the knifehand, backfist, elbow, foot sword, back of the heal etc. It is concentrating the most force we can and delivering with the smallest tool therefore producing as much damage as possible on the target area. A nail lying down on a piece of wood does not concentrate the force of the hammer hitting it, but if stood up and applied force of the small end of the nail into the wood the nail will pierce the wood. It is the same with your Taekwon-Do attacking tools.

Reaction Force (Bandong Ryok)

According to Newton’s Law, every action has as equal and opposite reaction.  Another reaction force is your own. A punch with the right fist is aided by pulling back the left fist to the hip. In theory this principle can be applied to many techniques in Taekwon-Do enabling you to utilise the full muscle set of the body, and engaging centrifugal force as well.

Equilibrium (Kyun Hyung)

Equilibrium is the theory of making use of sign wave movement to increase power, and to utilise balance and strength of stance, or when flying to maximise the force of the power. When a good walking stance is used, the back leg is straight and strong enabling the force of the punch to proceed through the target for example. Another example is when you perform a side kick on 3 or 4 plastic boards and your balance is not weight forward, you will bounce off the boards backward and not pierce the target. Balance needs to be considered whether you are stationary or moving in space.

Mass (Zilyang)
Mass is scientifically defined on Wiki as: Mass is the quantity of matter in a physical body. It is also a measure of the body's inertia, the resistance to acceleration (change of velocity) when a net force is applied.[1] An object's mass also determines the strength of its gravitational attraction to other bodies.
More simply the mass of a child's fist is not nearly the size, weight, and density of a black belt adult's fist. In order for a smaller mass weapon like a fist produce an equal amount of power as the adult black belt's fist, you must make up the difference with the other factors in this theory of power. Smaller people need to maximise their technique to produce as much power as a larger and heavier person.

Breath Control (Hohup Jojul)

Breath control helps you tense at the moment of impact, whether you are attacking or defending. Try taking a punch in the stomach without tensing your body with breath control and the punch will push through and penetrate your body, but if you use breath control you will find you can take quite a powerful punch to the stomach without discomfort. Likewise when you punch something a good breath control will focus your body muscles at impact and help you drive through the target. It has been implemented that the breath control should not create noise unnecessarily and should be something like blowing a lit match out in front of you. When taking a punch however, I personally find it better to use breath control with a slight grunt to tense my stomach muscles.

Speed (Sokdo)

Scientifically defined, force equals mass multiplied by acceleration (Force = Mass x Acceleration) or (Power = Mass x VelocitySquared). Given your Mass is not going to change a great deal when delivery a technique, Speed is by far the more contributing factor the force you can produce. Likewise, Velocity is exponentially more important than Mass in producing power.  The Wiki definition of Velocity is: Velocity is the directional speed of an object in motion as an indication of its rate of change in position as observed from a particular frame of reference and as measured by a particular standard of time (e.g. 60 km/h northbound).

Knowledge

Who or what is Choong-Moo? CHOONG-MOO was the name given to the great Admiral Yi Soon-Sin of the Lee Dynasty. He was reputed to have invented the first armoured battleship (Kobukson) in 1592, which is said to be the precursor of the present day submarine. The reason why this pattern ends with a left hand attack is to symbolize his regrettable death, having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king.
